A SAMPLER OF RECENT SUGGESTIONS (MARCH 2008)OF GENERAL INTEREST ... and our answers:

question Hi. Could we possible get local milk? Raw milk would be even better, but anything local would be very nice. Local cheese, too.

answerWe tried carrying Crescent Ridge Dairy in Sharon, MA, but they didn’t sell enough to continue. The same with Highland Dairy out in Lee, in western Mass – great stuff including butter, and the milk came in glass bottles. Garelick (local farms throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine and upstate New York) and Hood (started in Charlestown, but now national) are local, but huge – and I don’t think that is what you wanted. In Massachusetts, we can’t sell raw milk. Only the dairy that produces the milk can – no “reselling” allowed. We do have local cheeses. Neighborly, organic from Vermont; Cabot, a co-op in Vermont; and Grafton, also from Vermont. Just to break the pattern, we have Pineland Farms from Maine.

questionDear Co-op Board and Staff- I was beginning to feel sad about the co-op – but recently it feels good here. The shelves are stocked, produce looks good, and the music is nice. (I was sad to buy neighborly farm cheese that was moldy before I unwrapped it). Thank you and good wishes – we need the co-op.

answerThanks for the nice note. We have a great staff who have been working hard lately, and we appreciate your noticing!

questionStock more organic produce (less conventional)Folks would buy more Organic if it was more reasonably priced

answer (YOU decide what we stock, especially in produce, where product has a very short “shelf life”.
If we were selling more organic, we would order and stock more organic.
Is there something specific that you were looking for?
We try to offer both organic and conventional. Because organic is (usually) grown in smaller quantities, and with more care, it is more expensive to buy. In the long term, conventional produce is more expensive due to the fact the price does not include the hidden costs of environmental impact of factory farming, and the cost of government handouts to large agribusinesses.
