Dear President Obama,
I urge you to protect me and other Americans from dangerous air pollution by supporting the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to strengthen controls on ground-level ozone pollution. According to the EPA's analysis, setting levels for smog at 60 parts per billion could save up to 12,000 lives a year.
The current standard of 75 ppb is not protective enough. This standard, set during the Bush administration, ignored science and was not set at a strong enough level to protect public health with an adequate margin of safety, as required by law. The EPA's Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee reviewed more than 1,000 peer-reviewed studies on the harmful effects of smog, and unanimously recommended that the EPA tighten standards for smog to between 60 and 70 ppb.
The science is clear; ozone pollution causes serious health problems, including death.
Children, the elderly and people with lung disease have suffered the consequences of ozone pollution for far too long. It is time to make the air we breathe safer for everyone. I urge you to protect our health by supporting a strong smog standard.I thank you for your time and eagerly await your response.
(please don't forget your name and address!)
